Your First Visit
At Marina Milstein Orthodontics, we are committed to making your first visit a positive and informative experience. We understand that starting orthodontic treatment is a significant step, and we are here to guide you through each stage with personalized care and attention. Here’s what you can expect during your first visit with us.
Your journey to a beautiful, healthy smile begins with an initial consultation. During this visit, you will:
- We will introduce you to Dr. Marina Milstein and our highly skilled team members who are dedicated to your care.
- We will take the time to listen to your concerns, answer any questions you may have, and understand your goals for orthodontic treatment.
After the initial consultation, Dr. Milstein will perform a comprehensive examination to assess your orthodontic needs. This examination includes:
- Dr. Milstein will visually examine your teeth, jaws, and facial structure to identify any issues that may require correction.
- We will evaluate how your upper and lower teeth come together to determine if there are any bite problems, such as overbite, underbite, or crossbite.
To gain a complete understanding of your orthodontic needs, we will gather diagnostic records. These records provide detailed information that helps us create a personalized treatment plan. Our diagnostic process includes:
- We use advanced digital X-rays to capture detailed images of your teeth and jaws, allowing us to see the underlying structures.
- We take photographs of your teeth and smile to document your current condition and track your progress throughout treatment.
- Using state-of-the-art iTero digital impressions, we create accurate 3D models of your teeth for precise treatment planning.
Once we have gathered all the necessary information, Dr. Milstein will discuss your treatment options with you. We will present the various treatment options available to you, including traditional braces, Invisalign aligners, and other advanced solutions. Based on your unique needs and preferences, Dr. Milstein will recommend a customized treatment plan designed to achieve the best possible results.
At Marina Milstein Orthodontics, we pride ourselves on providing individualized care tailored to each patient’s unique needs. We focus on creating a comfortable and efficient treatment experience, using the latest technology and techniques. Our team is here to support you throughout your orthodontic journey, offering guidance on oral hygiene, diet, and any questions or concerns you may have.

Emergency Care
True orthodontic emergencies are rare, but when they occur we are here to help. As a general rule, you should call our office when you experience severe discomfort or have a painful appliance problem you can’t take care of yourself. We’ll be able to schedule an appointment to resolve the problem.
You might be surprised to learn that you may be able to solve many problems yourself temporarily until you can get to our office. If there is a loose piece that you can remove, put it in a plastic bag or envelope and bring it with you to your next appointment. If your braces are poking you, put orthodontic wax on the piece that’s sticking out. If the wire has slid to one side, you can pull it back to the other side with needle-nosed pliers, replacing it in the tube on the back tooth.
After alleviating your discomfort, it is very important that you still call our office as soon as possible to schedule a time to repair the problem. Allowing your appliance to remain damaged for an extended period of time may result in disruptions to your treatment plan.
General soreness
When you get your braces on, you may feel general soreness in your mouth, and teeth may be tender to biting pressures for three to five days. Stick to a soft diet until your teeth do not hurt to chew. Irritated gums and other sore spots can be relieved by rinsing your mouth with a warm salt-water mouthwash. Dissolve one teaspoonful of salt in eight ounces of warm water, and rinse your mouth vigorously. If the tenderness is severe, take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) or whatever you normally take for headache or similar pain. Aspirin, Ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and Naproxen Sodium (Naprosyn, Anaprox) actually slow the tooth movement, so it is not advisable to use them frequently while wearing braces.
The lips, cheeks, and tongue may become irritated for one to two weeks as they learn a new posture and become accustomed to the surface of the braces. You can put wax on the braces to lessen this. We’ll show you how!
Smile For A Lifetime
Dr. Marina Milstein is a proud participating provider of Smile For A Life Time Foundation. Smile for a Lifetime Foundation is a charitable nonprofit organization that matches disadvantaged kids in need of orthodontic treatment with our practice. Launched in 2008, Smile for a Lifetime Foundation aims to reach individuals with financial challenges, special situations, such as foster care or other out-of-home placements. Many of these youth are at risk for unfavorable health, academic, and social outcomes because of those challenges, and they are particularly vulnerable when they do not have the positive self-esteem and confidence that come with good oral heath and attractive smile.
The foundation’s mission is to create self-confidence, inspire hope, and change the lives of children in our community in a dramatic way. The gift of a smile can do all this for a deserving, underserved individual who, in turn, can use this gift to better themselves and our community.
