Retainers

After months or even years of wearing braces, it’s a monumental occasion to get them off and showcase your new smile finally. However, this is not where the journey to a perfect smile ends. The role of retainers is crucial in ensuring that your teeth stay in their new, correct positions.

The Role of Retainers

Once your braces come off, Dr. Marina Milstein will fit you for a retainer provided by our office. This custom-fit device is designed to sit in your mouth comfortably while keeping your teeth in place. Initially, wearing a retainer might feel bothersome, but it’s a critical step in maintaining the alignment of your teeth over time.

Initial Retainer Schedule

For the first few months post-braces, you’ll be instructed to wear your retainer full-time, removing it only for eating, drinking, and dental hygiene. For those concerned about appearances, clear plastic retainers are an available option that minimizes visibility.

Transitioning to Nighttime Wear

As your teeth adjust to their new positions, we will eventually recommend wearing your retainer only at night for a year. After this period, you might be able to take a couple of nights off each week. However, to preserve your dental alignment long-term, discontinuing retainer use entirely is not advisable.

Considering a Lingual Retainer

For those worried about forgetting their retainer or experiencing teeth shifting, a lingual retainer is an alternative. This type of retainer is affixed to the backs of your teeth, making it invisible from the front. Although a permanent solution, lingual retainers require diligent oral hygiene to prevent plaque and tartar buildup.

Retainers: Your Long-Term Commitment to a Straight Smile

Wearing your retainer as recommended is paramount to maintaining the alignment achieved through braces. Neglecting retainer usage risks undoing the time, money, and effort invested in correcting your smile.
